Last winter vocation, I saw the movie Wolf Totem which is adapted from the novel of the same name. The movie itself is impressive and it calls for environment protection again. Apparently, people living on the grassland have their own believes but the outsiders broke their believes, as a result, they think they were punished by the god. The people living on the grassland revered the nature with their believes, it seems that their believes make them powerful. But in the end, it is also the belief which makes them too afraid to change their life. Unfortunately, a disaster happened on the grassland. So there is a question, will belief make us more powerful?
It is difficult to answer the question. Similar debates are happening every day in the real world. For example, some people believe that we should obey the nature laws and say no to GM technology, however, the other say that we have to face the food shortage and GM technology is very important. It is ambivalent for us to tell which is right. Belief is a mental representation, treated in various academic disciplines, especially philosophy and psychology, of a sentient being’s attitude toward the likelihood or truth of something. This is the definition of belief given by Wikipedia. So I think we can regard belief as restraint, then sometimes it may produce good effect because it could be the baseline. However, it could also be the bondage of exploration.
Under such circumstances, how to look on belief may be a difficult choice, but it is easy for us to choose. If you are conservative, you can just do the reasonable things. Otherwise, if you are adventurous, you can try your best to explore the world. Both of them are the power for the world, different people have different ways to contribute to the world. This is the diversity of a population.
We can conclude that belief surely make us more powerful as different people have different opinions upon it. Even in the movie, there is also brave person like the leading character who is trying to cross the dogs and wolves and break the belief. So no matter we choose to honor the belief or break it, they are all roads to progress.
